Small things

I love writing about the latest crisis and how Christ comes through in the end through His Body. But I'm learning more and more that it's in the small things that true community shines.
It's been one of those weeks. First our pipes froze. We had no water in our kitchen. Then our pipes burst. We had no water in our house. Then our fridge went out. We had no place to store our food. Now, it looks like something is wrong with our dishwasher.
On the one hand, none of this is the end of the world. In fact, we are still better off than most of the world. On the other hand, these are the kinds of things that can drive you crazy. And they did.
But we were never alone.
Chris let us take over his fridge with our food. Amanda's mom and grandmother came to see us. Greg and Vena let us take over their freezer. Aaron and Halle came over to transport food. Aaron also gave us the name of a good plumber, and Patrick made sure the plumber gave us a good deal. And then, to top it all off, Kim asked us to bring over laundry baskets of filthy dishes so that she could wash them all for us (this has to be the modern day equivalent of washing someone's feet).
This is community. It goes beyond the hero moments to the boring. The annoying. The daily.
When asking us how we were doing with it all, Greg pointed out something that I had not noticed. He brought attention to the fact that, through it all, our kids never blinked. They expected others to be there. To come through. To truly be community.
For once, I am thankful for taking things for granted.
